The simple answer: they did so out of thirst. As for the Gift, well, it may certainly be seen as such, as it may be passed around.

We don’t even know what you are talking about… but we know that if anyone tried to bite us WE wouldn’t think it was a gift! We would think they were trying to attack us!

And how would biting anyone do anything about being thirsty…?
